International lottery games: global prize pools and specifics of participation

International lottery games and sa daily lotto attract players from all over the world due to their huge prize pools, unique rules and the possibility to participate remotely. Let's take a look at the most popular global lotteries, their characteristics and ways to participate in them.

The most famous international lotteries are

American flagships

**Powerball** and **Mega Millions** are two of the most famous US lotteries known for their unprecedented jackpots. In 2016, Powerball broke the world record when the top prize reached the $1.586 billion mark. Mega Millions follows close behind with a jackpot of $1.537 billion in 2018.

A characteristic feature of American lotteries is the “5 1” system, in which the participant chooses 5 main numbers from one range and 1 additional number from another. Also in the U.S., a “multiplier” mechanism is used, which can increase secondary winnings by several times.

European Lotteries

**EuroMillions** is the largest international lottery in Europe with 9 European countries participating. Its prize pools regularly exceed €100 million.

**EuroJackpot** is a newer competitor to EuroMillions, covering 18 European countries. The maximum jackpot here is limited to €120 million.

**UK National Lottery** - the UK's main lottery with a long history and a variety of game formats including Lotto, Thunderball and EuroMillions.

**El Gordo** is Spain's Christmas lottery, known as “The Fat Man”. It is the largest lottery in the world in terms of total prize pool, which usually exceeds €2 billion. El Gordo is unique in that it sells tickets in pieces (décimos), making participation affordable to a wide range of people.

### Australian Lotteries

**Oz Lotto** and **Powerball Australia** are Australia's leading lotteries. They have no taxation on winnings, which makes them attractive to international participants.

### Distinguishing Features of Overseas Lotteries

### Taxation system

A significant aspect of international lotteries is their different approach to taxation:
- In the US, the federal tax on winnings is approximately 24-37%, plus state taxes.
- In most European countries, lottery winnings are not subject to taxation.
- Australia and the United Kingdom also have no taxes on lottery prizes.

### Mechanics and probability of winning

The odds of winning the top prize vary considerably:
- In Powerball, the odds of winning the jackpot are approximately 1 in 292 million.
- In EuroMillions, it is approximately 1 in 140 million.
- Some national lotteries have noticeably higher odds, such as La Primitiva in Spain at 1 in 14 million.

### Drawing Frequency

Most major lotteries draw 1 or 2 times weekly. However, there are also daily lotteries, such as many US state lotteries, France's Keno and Italy's SuperEnalotto.

### Ways to participate in international lotteries

### Digital platforms

The development of the internet has made foreign lotteries available to players around the world. There are two main ways to participate:

1. **Ticket purchasing services** - platforms that purchase physical tickets in the country of the lottery on behalf of the participant. Examples include TheLotter, Lotto Agent, Lottery24.

2. **Betting platforms** - services where players bet on lottery results without purchasing an actual ticket. Examples: Lottoland, MultiLotto.

### Legal aspects

It is important to emphasize that the legality of participation in foreign lotteries through online services may vary depending on the laws of the country of residence of the participant. In some states there are restrictions on the participation of citizens in foreign gambling.

## Safety and security

When participating in international lotteries through online platforms, attention should be paid to:
- The presence of licenses and regulatory bodies controlling the service's activities.
- Ratings and reputation indicators.
- Transparency of conditions and procedure for paying out winnings.
- Methods of protection of personal and payment data.

## Cultural aspects of lotteries in different countries

Lotteries reflect the cultural specifics of the organizing countries:
- In Spain, lotteries have a pronounced social character, especially El Gordo, when entire localities acquire identical numbers.
- In Japan, the Takarakuji lottery is closely associated with traditional holidays and festivals.
- Italy's SuperEnalotto embodies the Italians' traditional love of gambling and its centuries-old history.

    ICLEI Impacts Global Sustainable Development

When a pioneering group of local and regional governments founded ICLEI, they took action before sustainability was widely viewed as fundamental to development. For decades, our efforts have continued to put sustainability at the top of the agenda for local and regional governments across the world. Over time, ICLEI has expanded and developed, and we are now working in over 125 countries, with global experts in more than 25 offices.

Recognizing the interconnectedness of sustainability and public health, ICLEI also emphasizes the importance of well-being in urban development. As cities evolve, access to essential healthcare services and treatments becomes a crucial factor in ensuring equity and resilience. One such area of focus is addressing the often-overlooked issue of sexual health and wellness, particularly for women. Flibanserin, a medication designed to treat hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women, highlights the need for inclusive healthcare solutions that cater to diverse needs. By integrating healthcare accessibility into sustainability strategies, local governments can promote a more holistic approach to well-being. Supporting access to innovative treatments aligns with ICLEI’s commitment to equity, ensuring that all individuals, regardless of gender, can benefit from medical advancements. Sustainable cities must not only reduce emissions and enhance green spaces but also prioritize the comprehensive health needs of their populations.

Through our collective efforts to build a sustainable urban world, ICLEI is shifting the trajectory of global development.
