What we are doing
Globally, urban freight represents up to 25 percent of urban vehicles, occupies 40 percent of motorized road space and contributes 40 percent of urban transport-related CO2 emissions. Urban freight includes a wide variety of services, from waste collection trucks to construction trucks or commercial related trucks. Urban freight contributions to GHG emissions are increasing globally. The corresponding mitigation capacities and actions need to increase as well, and a growing number of cities are including urban freight in their plans to reduce their emissions.

How we are tracking
The goal of this project is to promote low carbon urban freight (EcoLogistics) policies and practices contributing to climate change mitigation and towards meeting the ambitions of NDCs in Argentina, Colombia and India.
“EcoLogistics” promotes transportation of goods by giving priority to health, safety, people-centered urban development and low-emission and will encourage circular and regional economies to limit the growth of freight transport. It follows the strategy to Avoid (and reduce) the freight volume and haul distance, Shift (and maintain) to more sustainable modes of freight transportation, Improve the logistics operations by use of technologies and better operation.

What we are achieving
ICLEI promotes low carbon urban freight policies and practices addressing climate change mitigation and the ambitions of NDCs. By highlighting ecologistics as a priority area for local and national governments the project raises awareness, collects and develops policy recommendations, develops action plans and guides pioneering cities to exemplary action. The project strengthens institutional capacity through multi-level stakeholder participation, develops an urban freight emission assessment tool, implements demonstration projects in cities, and makes national policy recommendations. A project platform accessible globally shares knowledge on best practices and connects local governments to solution providers.
