With a population of 28 million, the Greater Jakarta area is the largest metropolitan area in Southeast Asia and the second largest in the world. Rapid growth, urbanization and land commercialization has caused a substantial increases in energy consumption, and consequently, greenhouse gas emissions. Through Ambitious City Promises, the local government of Jakarta has demonstrated its commitment to low emission development and climate adaptation.

Bekasi City lies east of Jakarta and is part of the Greater Jakarta metropolitan area. Home to over 2.4 million residents, Bekasi is experiencing high traffic congestion on its roads. Bekasi addressing this challenge by implementing a smart mobility agenda focused on integrated modes of transportation, such as light rail and bus rapid transit.

Tangerang is at the center of the manufacturing industry on Java Island, with more than 1,000 factories for both domestic and multinational corporations. Facing rapid development, transportation is a key issue in the city as the population and the workforce continue to grow. Through Ambitious City Promises, Tangerang is seeking ways to incorporate integrated mass transportation options for its citizens while implementing low emission development initiatives, such as car free days.

Pasig City is a residential, industrial and commercial hub that is among the top 10 most populous cities in the Philippines. With rapid urbanization and commercialization, Pasig City is experiencing worsening air pollution and is vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Through Ambitious City Promises, Pasig City is raising awareness on low emissions development and engaging citizens through public consultations.

Cradled in a valley alongside the Marikina river, Marikina City is home to approximately 451,000 residents. The local government is aiming to advance economic development through nurturing industry and home-grown enterprises. The city aims to optimize resources to achieve sustainable infrastructure such as bikeways and pedestrian-friendly sidewalks.

Hanoi is Vietnam’s 1,000-year-old capital city and home to around eight percent of the country’s total population. The city is a major center for business, culture, technology and education and is acknowledged as one of the most peaceful cities in Asia. The city’s economy, which has grown rapidly over the past decades, accounts for around 13 percent of Vietnam’s GDP. At present, Hanoi is establishing its GHG inventory and the Ambitious City Promises project will support the city in establishing a baseline and developing a low emissions development action plan.

Soc Son is a suburb of Hanoi facing multiple challenges around environmental management but the district government has set sustainable development targets in many economic sectors such as tourism, agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and construction. Through Ambitious City Promises, Soc Son aims to harmonize economic development and environmental protection.

Son Tay

Son Tay is the economic, cultural and social center of Hanoi’s North-West area. It is known as a historical town and is a center for eco-tourism in the city. Because of its rapid development, Son Tay now faces problems brought by pollution and infrastructure overload. In 2016, Son Tay’s waste treatment facility already reached its full capacity and continued dumping resulted in a garbage landslide. In this time of rapid industrialization and modernization in Vietnam, the local government of Son Tay is committed to environment protection and is working through Ambitious City Promises to achieve a more sustainable development trajectory.
