The program provides a peer-to-peer exchange, capacity building, and diplomatic engagement, all focused on implementing projects that solve critical urban challenges around sustainability, inclusivity, and resiliency.
The Cities Forward were designed to help Latin America and the Caribbean cities to create sustainable, inclusive, and resilient futures, sharing their knowledge with the U.S. cities.

What we are achieving
Some of the 2023 Cities Forward activities included:
The participation of Claudio Castro, Mayor of Renca and Rogelio Biazzi, Chief of Staff of Rosario in the Climate Summit of the Americas;
The launch of the “Cities in Motion” Program (April, 2023);
The announcement of the selection of Latin American and American cities of the program. Selection of the city of Rosario and the commune of Renca (June, 2023);
Start of the project’s activities. Pairing the city of Rosario with the city of Chattanooga. Pairing of the town of Renca with the city of Evanston;
Project presentation meeting (August, 2023);
The Kick-off of the “Cities in Motion” Program in Mexico City (September, 2023);
Beginning of the Assessment of needs and profiles of the municipalities (September, 2023).
Some of the 2024 Cities Forward activities include:
Enabling Environment Workshops held in Mérida and Fortaleza (April and May 2024);
Technical visit held in Manaus (May 2024);
Delivery of project roadmaps for each participating city.;
Hemispheric Dialogue held during ICLEI’s World Congress in São Paulo;
Cooperation Charters between paired cities signed: Fortaleza and Hawaii County; Rosario and Chattanooga; Renca and Evanston; Cali and Baltimore; Cartagena and Denver;
Technical supports defined for each city (Project Prep Advisor and Technical Assistance);
Beginning of Climate Risk Assessments for selected cities (Fortaleza and Renca);
Accelerator Workshop held in Cartagena (October 2024);
Technical visit of the Ecobarrios project held in Cali during COP 16;
Technical visit held in Ambato (November 2024);
Assistance for the preparation of the Phase 2 of Ecobarrios Program in Cali Colombia. (Project Prep Advisor).
As a result of this process, three components are being developed for the project in its new phase, each with its respective activities:
Social Structure: The project has a strong social component, recognizing the value and need to involve the community in actions to achieve sustainable results.
Technological and Ecological Solutions: This component focuses on identifying applicable solutions for the neighborhoods, which may include activities, urban interventions and equipment that contribute to environmental results.
Institutional Architecture: This new phase of Ecobarrios aims to expand the participation of both governmental and non-governmental actors to increase the impact of the results. To achieve this, the need has been identified to incorporate a component that coordinates this participation and strengthens the institutional framework, allowing the support, improvement and scalability of the actions.
