Global Covenant of Mayors in Korea aims to raise the ambition of local climate action in Korea to limit global temperature increase to below 1.5°C. Through joining GCoM initiatives, Korean local governments have an increased opportunity to participate in global projects and initiatives, while also establishing an international profile. GCoM activities include reporting to the ICLEI-CDP unified reporting system, which makes their climate policies and actions more transparent and accountable to the international stakeholders. Through joining the network, local governments can make their climate policies and action consistent regardless of their political cycle, while also being able to compare ambition and efforts with other reporting cities, and learn about more effective and transformative climate policies. Upon joining GCoM, cities can report to the ICLEI-CDP unified reporting system, participate in regional GCoM events to showcase their climate policies, network with peer local governments by engaging in local events, and expand their impacts through being the first priority cities of ICLEI case studies in Korea.
