What we are doing
The Presidential Climate Commission (PCC) has been working on developing pathways to support the South Africa’s Just Transition (JT) to low carbon and climate resilient economy and society. This activity is needed to further support and strengthen the PCCs stakeholder and community engagements and participation in the decisions that affect them relating to the JT. This activity is needed to help the PCC understand how it can effectively strengthen its engagement approaches with different stakeholders and communities on climate change and JT- related topics. This activity places on local governments the urgent to understand and be equipped to respond to the transition in a rapid manner. This rapidness includes collaborating and co- creating with the communities, PCC, and other social partners to create and strengthen awareness on climate change and the JT, facilitate consultations and capacity building and training to enable communities to be equipped to participate in the JT, as well as developing practical ways to respond to climate change. This activity has the potential to help local governments particularly in the current two transition priority areas (Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape), to build their own capacities and to collaborate with the PCC and other social partners to help build their capacities on the JT, so that they are able to develop policies that respond to the JT. Policies that also build the capacities of stakeholders and communities within their municipalities.
