What we are doing
South Africa’s just transition to a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy faces challenges in effectively engaging stakeholders and communities in decision-making processes. The Presidential Climate Commission (PCC) needs to strengthen its approaches to stakeholder and community engagement to ensure inclusive participation in the just transition. Local governments, particularly in priority areas like Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape, must rapidly adapt to the transition, collaborating closely with communities, the PCC, and other partners to build awareness, facilitate consultations, and enhance capacity for practical climate change responses. This effort is crucial for enabling local governments to develop responsive policies that empower stakeholders and communities for active participation in the just transition.

1. A summary report of the economic context of Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape;
2. A stakeholder map and engagement strategy;
3. Submission of Stakeholder Perspectives on Engaging with South Africa’s Just Transition report';
4. Organise two 1- day community workshops turned into community focus groups; and
5.. Organise at least 2 EU- SA virtual dialogues.

What we are achieving
Through this activity, ICLEI Africa is helping the PCC to effectively strengthen its stakeholder and community engagements with a different of stakeholders and communities. Through this activity, ICLEI Africa has developed a report for the PCC on Stakeholders Perspectives on Engaging with South Africa's just transition.
Qualitative research methodology was used, interviews with various stakeholders and focus groups with communities were the two key data collection tools utilised. This primary data and relevant secondary data was used to develop a granular analysis of stakeholders perspectives on South Africa's just transition.
The positive impact of this report is that it presents concise and coherent raw insights from communities and stakeholders on how the PCCs engagements can be strengthened, relevant, and responsive. These insights have helped build a framework to inform the PCC's future engagement processes on the just transition.
