What we are doing
There is no longer a debate on whether the transition to cleaner energy options should happen, it is whether it happens in a just or unjust way. Besides the climate change imperative to transition, the coal-sector in South Africa is currently in a sunset phase, and many of the current coal power fleet is in a dire state of disrepair, thus presenting an ideal opportunity for the transition to cleaner electricity alternatives. However, the coal sector is a significant employer and contributor to the GDP in South Africa. In addition, the country has many socio-economic challenges including that of high poverty and unemployment, hence it is important that the transition to a greener, regenerative economy is done so in a just and inclusive manner. Local governments such as Steve Tshwete Local Municipality (STLM) which are located in the coal-heartland of South Africa, rely heavily on an extractive, coal-based economy. As a result, STLM will face the direct consequences of transition which must be careful managed to ensure that both short term impacts (e.g. job losses) and long term impacts (e.g. achieving climate change ambitions) are adequately considered. Through the project, the municipality will receive support on ensuring enabling framework conditions are in place in order to undertake action planning and unlock financing for Just Transition projects.
