What we did
Water management in urban areas faces serious challenges, including overexploitation of water resources, pollution of water bodies, and inefficiencies in distribution and treatment systems. In many cities, these problems are aggravated by a lack of adequate planning, accelerated urbanization, and the effects of climate change, such as prolonged droughts and intense rainfall. These conditions affect the availability of drinking water, increase flood risks, and deteriorate the quality of life of urban communities.
ICLEI MECS identified these problems in the cities of Guatemala and Córdoba, Veracruz, where pressure on water resources and insufficient management have resulted in significant challenges to ensuring comprehensive and sustainable urban water management.

What we achieved
ICLEI MECS delivered an online training on Integrated Urban Water Management, aimed at Guatemala City government officials and other key stakeholders in water management. The training used a participatory methodology that combined technical presentations, analysis of international success cases, and a practical exercise based on the identification of local challenges and solutions.
The activity allowed attendees to strengthen their understanding of the importance of efficient and integrated water management, promoting the implementation of good practices such as wastewater reuse, rainwater harvesting, and sustainable urban planning. As a result, the training improved the technical capacities of participants and laid the foundation for developing more resilient and sustainable strategies in urban water management.
