What we are doing
Extensive scientific research and continuous advocacy has ensured that climate change is a global development priority. While the political commitment to the climate agenda is heartening, we now face a complex challenge: putting into practice what science is clearly calling us to do. This is complex because many proposed climate actions are either too expensive for many governments, or are construed as contradicting their developmental rights, aspirations and responsibilities. The call to pause when in a crisis – making space for reflection Bayo Akomolafe recently expressed that “times are urgent – we must slow down,” framing the vital need to pause when faced with crisis. This sentiment aligns with, not contradicts, the IPCC’s recent clarion call that every single decision now - today, this week, not next month or next year - matters more than ever before. To make the best decisions we can, with the information available to us, we need to be especially mindful and strategic, and this only comes when we pause, when we reflect, when we contemplate. Africans need a moment to pause, to reflect, and to consider the future or futures we are entering, and envision the future we seek. Without this pause moment, this visioning exercise, we risk applying solutions not tailored to Africa’s contexts, and miss a critical opportunity to chart uniquely African climate resilient development pathways.
