With the opening of Korea’s Seohaean Expressway, Dangjin enjoyed a prosperous economy thanks to remarkable growth as large businesses such as steel and thermal power companies moved into the city centering around Dangjin Port, which boasts the nation’s highest increase in cargo volume. However, its skewed industrial structure due to rapid growth, air pollution, inequality, polarization and other challenges pose a threat to citizens’ daily lives and health.
In response to such challenges, in the beginning of Korea’s 7th municipal government, the city has set the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of “leaving no one behind” as a top municipal value and been improving social injustice caused during the growth phase by laying out a vision “Future We Make Together, Sustainable Dangjin” and promoting citizen participation.
