Municipality of Barcelona

About
Barcelona is Spain's second largest city and part of the largest metropolitan area on the Mediterranean Sea, with around 4.5 million people. History, language and a distinct cultural, political and legal tradition have shaped it into a city with a festive atmosphere and a thriving tourist industry. The Balearic Sea to the south and east and the Collserola mountain range to the north highly limited the space into which the city could expand. Barcelona has pursued a more efficient and sustainable model of development by designing better public spaces and by providing space for nature and biodiversity. Its efforts are meant to achieve greater comfort with respect to noise and air quality, to minimize waste generation, to shift towards sustainable management, and to adapt to climate change.
