Under the theme “Time for Walking,” the 25th edition of the International Walk21 Conference on Walking and Liveable Communities will explore how to develop and implement walking policies and programs that deliver streets and public spaces where communities enjoy spending time walking.
Running from 6 to 10 October in Tirana, Albania, the Conference will gather global and regional experts and leaders from across the Balkans and Europe to reflect on how community needs, planning decisions and infrastructure investments are advancing the way we move.
On Tuesday, 7 October, at 11:00 CEST, ICLEI’s Sustainable Mobility team will present “A cultural SPARK: Utilizing tactical urbanism for climate action in the Philippines.”
The session will showcase how the SPARK Project transformed Maginhawa Street in Quezon City and A. Mabini Street in Pasig City from motorized corridors into vibrant, people-centered spaces. It will underscore different aspects of the project, from cultural research and community engagement to tactical design and policy implications.
The IKI-funded Sparking Active Mobility Actions for Climate-Friendly Cities – SPARK project is implemented by ICLEI in collaboration with the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities (ICSC) and it utilizes tactical urbanism—short-term, low-cost, and scalable interventions—to test innovative ideas for long-term urban transformation and open data. These culture-sensitive urban interventions foster active mobility, community pride, and more livable cities, while serving as a replicable model for others to follow suit.
Hosted by the Municipality of Tirana in partnership with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the Walk21 Foundation, the Conference has positioned itself as a key platform towards building more walkable communities globally.
