When ICLEI’s network convenes in April 2021 for their triennial World Congress, it will be the first time in ICLEI’s thirty year history that they will do so virtually.
“The City of Malmö is proud to host the ICLEI World Congress 2021 and for the first time in ICLEI’s history, it will now be a virtual World Congress. Although we had been looking forward to welcoming delegates from all over the world to Malmö, by switching to a virtual congress we see an opportunity to welcome many more delegates and share our work in creating a green, healthy and equitable city in a new and inclusive way,” said Mayor of Malmö Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh. “And of course we look forward to welcoming you physically to Malmö in the future!”
A virtual conference promises participation and engagement far beyond what an in-person event can offer, at an important moment for sustainability and climate change.
“Every three years, the ICLEI network comes together at the ICLEI World Congress to affirm our commitment to sustainability at all levels, share our learnings and achievements, and chart the course for our future work. Next year, in light of the global pandemic, the City of Malmö will host the first virtual World Congress,” said Gino Van Begin, Secretary General of ICLEI.
“At this moment, local sustainability is more important than ever as cities around the world are tackling not only COVID-19 but accelerating climate and biodiversity crises. By taking ICLEI World Congress 2021 online, we can ensure that cities and regions all around the world can engage and learn from each other as we work together towards a sustainable urban future,” he continued.
