What we are achieving
GCoM provided Korean local governments with variety of opportunities to learn, develop and monitor climate actions and policies as well as to upskill local governments and institutions.
In 2024, KO supported 28 Korean signatories by organizing Global Climate Cities Forum 2024 and operating Cities Meet Cities Program successfully. Also, it conducted various activities to encourage the non-GCoM signatories to join the GCoM so that they could get technical support from both ICLEI and the GCoM. Global Climate Cities Forum 2024: Towards Carbon Neutral Cities was designed as a global event to build capacity for Korean local governments by providing various strategic approaches for energy transition and nature-based solutions, sharing policies from German and Asian Cities. A total of 125 participants, including 65 local government officers, attended the forum, highlighting the demand for a policy capacity building to address climate change. Through Cities Meet Cities Program, a knowledge-exchange program aimed at enhancing climate action plans by sharing the best practices and experiences among GCoM signatories, Daegu City and Melbourne City have been paired and successfully completed planned visits focusing on renewable energy and climate change adaptation. Through this program, public officials from both cities gained valuable insights, and a great relationship has been established to facilitate continued collaboration in developing climate policies.
The GCoM platform was helpful in improving the quality of reporting as it included a help desk, regional conferences, various workshops, webinars and guidelines.
