Following approval by the ICLEI Global Board in June, São Paulo City Hall announced during COP28, alongside Yunus Arikanl, ICLEI’s Director of Global Advocacy, and Rodrigo Perpétuo, ICLEI South America Executive Secretary, the dates of the ICLEI World Congress 2024, which will be held between 18 – 21 June.
The announcement was made by the delegation of Municipal Secretaries who represented Mayor Ricardo Nunes at the Climate Conference. Led by the Secretary of Government Edson Aparecido, the delegation also included the Secretary of Climate Change Gilberto Natalini, the Secretary of Green and Environment Rodrigo Ravena, the Secretary of Economic Development and Labour Aline Cardoso, and the Undersecretary of International Relations Ambassador Maria Auxiliadora.
Accredited by cross-cutting policies to tackle the climate crisis, backed by the Local Climate Action Plan made possible by C40 and developed by ICLEI in partnership with WayCarbon, the City Council presented innovative policies to achieve a 50 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the city by 2030, compared to 2017 levels, such as:
- Integrated approach: Actions that reduce both climate risk and greenhouse gas emissions in order to use public resources efficiently.
- Prioritize and strengthen existing actions: Begin with actions already set out in sectoral plans, programs, and projects by inserting and enhancing their climate and inclusive potential.
- Take regret-free and win-win actions: Implement actions that are worthwhile or whose costs are relatively low in view of benefits and measures that bring wider social, economic and environmental benefits.
- Strengthen climate governance in the Municipality: Mobilize different internal and external actors to the City Council to implement integrated and intersectoral actions.
- Promote metropolitan and regional mobilization: Inspire and mobilize other municipalities to adopt actions to tackle climate change.
The Congress will be organized in such a way as to allow participants to learn about these and other exciting innovations through mobile workshops at the World Congress.
Important activities such as the Research & Innovation Symposium, ICLEI Global Council meeting, the Metropolis Network Council meeting and the Cities Forward Programme meeting will take place on 18 June 2023.
Welcome back to Brazil! Welcome to the ICLEI World Congress 2024 in São Paulo!
