Even with the various initiatives and articulations that exist in the Amazon territory to promote sustainable development, the financing agenda for local climate action by subnational governments has received little attention.
Thus, the strengthening of technical and institutional capacities is a fundamental axis of work, combined with the dissemination of knowledge about forms and opportunities for financing climate projects. While this knowledge has the potential to strengthen the engagement of local governments and their partners, the design of bankable projects should attract investments to the region.
Considering this context, ICLEI South America and Instituto Clima e Sociedade (iCS) have held on June 29 a virtual meeting with the objective of discussing measures to strengthen technical and institutional capacities with local governments in the Brazilian Legal Amazon region for the preparation of financeable climate projects (mitigation and/or adaptation) and thus contribute to the implementation of the Brazilian NDC and local and regional commitments. The event was the kickoff of the project “Mayors for Climate Action: Climate Financing for the Implementation of the Brazilian NDC”.
To this end, ICLEI has worked in three main areas of work: strengthening technical and institutional capacities (training, workshops, dialogue), supporting the development of financeable projects, and promoting the participation of cities in COPs 26 and 27.
